Saving money on tires for your Jeep
Author profile: Bill (Admin)

Yup, here's another article on tires. I already discussed how you can save money on buying your next set of bigger tires for your Jeep. Along those same lines, you should consider having more than one spare. I'm not suggestioning you carry more than one spare...there isn't room in most Jeeps for that. I'm suggesting that you pick up an extra spare and keep it in the garage. Look, you're hopefully going to get out and go four wheeling. Go for it! But one of these days you're going to pick up a nail that will puncture a sidewall, so the tire can't be fixed. You'll put on your spare...and then what? Buy a new tire? What if you have 20k miles on the other three tires on your Jeep? Besides, buying a new tires will run you $150 or so. If you see a member or a tire place selling some good used tires that match your rig, you can expect to pay less than $50 each and sometimes $20 or less.

My motivation for writing this little article is personal experience. I have a truck with 4 good but used tires on it and a useable but not very good spare. Last time I was at a tire center, I had an opportunity to buy some good used tires that matched the tires already on my truck for only $40 each. I passed and now I'm sorry. I lost a tire the other day and not only do I not want to spend $185 plus tax on a new tire, that tire would have way more tread than any of the others. And no one within a hundred miles of where I live has any matching used tires.

So save yourself some money and some hassle and buy a spare spare if you find a good deal.
